The Basque Cheesecake at nephew (Tomigaya, Tokyo): A Refreshingly Tangy & Creamy Delight

Tomigaya in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, is a vibrant neighborhood lined with trendy bakeries, stylish cafes, and charming bistros. Today, I’m introducing the Basque Cheesecake from “nephew,” a cozy bistro & cafe tucked away in a quiet alley of this lively district.

About nephew

nephew is located about a 5-minute walk from both Yoyogi-Hachiman Station and Yoyogi-Koen Station, nestled in a narrow alleyway where you might not expect to find a restaurant entrance at first glance. The entire renovated vintage house serves as the shop across its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. While not a massive space, it features thoughtfully arranged counter and table seating, making it equally welcoming for solo cafe visitors or small groups of two to three people.

During the day, it operates as a dining cafe offering desserts and light meals, while in the evening it transforms into an authentic bistro serving courses, à la carte dishes, and an extensive alcoholic beverage menu. On my Instagram feed, where I follow many cafe and dessert enthusiasts, it is almost always highlighted as a spot for photogenic sweets. However, checking reviews on Tabelog reveals that plenty of patrons also visit during dinner time to enjoy fine dining paired with drinks.

For this visit, I stopped by in the early afternoon to try their Basque Cheesecake.

A Refreshing Basque Cheesecake with a Pleasant Tang

It is a minimalist Basque cheesecake with a beautifully caramelized, deep-golden surface. While forks are the standard cutlery for cheesecake, nephew provides a spoon instead. For an ultra-creamy, molten-textured Basque cheesecake, a spoon might indeed be the ideal way to enjoy it.

Taking a bite, you can fully relish the lush, melt-in-your-mouth texture and velvety smoothness that define a stellar Basque cheesecake.

Flavor-wise, it features a crisp, refreshing profile with a distinct, pleasant acidity cutting through the rich creaminess. This tartness harmonizes beautifully with the bittersweet caramel notes from the scorched top, creating deep, sophisticated layers of flavor. Many Basque cheesecakes tend to skip noticeable acidity to emphasize heavy dairy richness, but this version intentionally highlights a clean, defined tang. Since nephew operates as a bistro, this refreshing finish ensures it doesn’t feel overly heavy when enjoyed as a post-meal dessert. While it might look like a standard, minimalist Basque cheesecake at first glance, it truly embodies the refined craftsmanship of a French bistro.
