Review: Yamazaki “Tsukawa” Hokkaido Cheese Cream Buns — Inspired by the Legendary Steamed Cake

From Yamazaki Baking’s wildly popular “Tsukawa” (thin-crust bun) series comes a brand-new release inspired by another of the baker’s beloved national classics: the “Hokkaido Cheese Steamed Cake.”

Reinterpreting the Hokkaido Cheese Steamed Cake as a Cream Bun

I purchased this at 7-Eleven, though it may also be stocked at supermarkets and larger drugstores. Priced at 223 yen (tax included), each package contains four buns, just like the rest of the lineup.

While the Tsukawa series has previously featured cheese-centric fillings like “Cheese Custard Cream Bun” and “Rare Cheese Cream Bun,” this “Cheese Cream Bun with Hokkaido Cheese” is entirely distinct. According to my research, this specific variation has never been released before.
