At the supermarket Seiyu, I spotted a unique hybrid sweet combining a kouign-amann with cheesecake: the “Cheese Kouign-Amann.”

Released Under the Trial Brand
This product bears the logo of Trial, a company partnered with Seiyu. Trial is a discount supermarket chain originating in Fukuoka that develops a wide array of private-brand items, including high-volume, cost-effective desserts—some of which I have reviewed on this blog before. Following Seiyu joining the Trial group in July 2025, Trial’s original product lineup began appearing on Seiyu’s shelves as well, and this Cheese Kouign-Amann is one such release.
The price was 171.72 yen (tax included). As a newly released featured item, it was prominently displayed across a large section of the bakery aisle.
A Kouign-Amann Stuffed with Cheesecake, Yet Distinct from the Classic Style
Marketed as a “Cheese Kouign-Amann,” this pastry brings together traditional French kouign-amann pastry and cheese. However, it differs from classic kouign-amann in one major way: the incorporation of a cookie crust layer.
Opening the package and placing it on a plate, the top is coated with cookie dough while the pastry base sits below. Although it appears upside down at first glance, it was packaged this way in the bag.

Flipping it over, it looks more like a familiar pastry featuring a brioche base lined with cookie crust.

Standard kouign-amann typically does not have cookie dough, relying instead on caramelized sugar that melts and cools into a crunchy, candied crust. This product features virtually no surface caramelization, substituting cookie dough to deliver that crunchy bite instead.
Slicing it open reveals a cheesecake layer tucked inside. According to the package, it features a “fluffy cheesecake made with margarine containing fermented butter.”

Pastries marrying kouign-amann with cheesecake have actually been released in the past by FamilyMart and 7-Eleven. While their shapes differed—one rectangular, the other round—both opted for a baked cheesecake-style cheese filling layered across the surface.

In contrast, this new creation encloses the cheesecake directly inside the dough—a first for this hybrid concept.
Tasting Impressions
The bread itself is fluffy, with a pleasant moistness and no dry texture. The cookie crust is delightfully crunchy and provides great bite, lacking the sticky, tooth-clinging feel typical of traditional caramelized kouign-amann—a change that may divide personal preferences. The thin layer of cheesecake in the center offers a brief hint of velvety richness, though its presence is rather subtle overall.

Flavor-wise, you get the rich, buttery sweetness characteristic of kouign-amann paired with the warm, comforting baked notes of the cookie crust. The cheesecake portion adds a creamy touch with a subtle saltiness, delivering brief moments of sweet-and-savory contrast, though it reads more like a savory margarine cream than an unmistakable cheesecake.
While the cheesecake presence is fairly modest, the textures are fun and the overall flavor is well-crafted. For a sweet bakery item priced under 200 yen, the quality is undeniably solid. Be sure to check it out if you visit Seiyu or Trial.
As a pastry blending kouign-amann with cheesecake, its internal filling structure is unprecedented. For that novelty alone, it is well worth trying once. While it shares many elements with existing bakery breads, I look forward to exploring more future creations that combine kouign-amann and cheesecake.
