About Mr. CHEESECAKE

Mr. CHEESECAKE was founded by renowned chef Koji Tamura, whose impressive background includes training in Michelin-starred French restaurants and helping launch starred dining establishments. Today, beyond their flagship online store, the brand operates physical boutiques at prominent transit hubs and shopping destinations across Tokyo, including Tokyo Station, Ginza, and Haneda Airport.

Beyond signature cheesecakes, they offer an enticing variety of sweets such as cheese financiers and tiramisu. Every creation introduces novel textures and flavor profiles through unprecedented ingredient pairings and culinary techniques. To me, it feels like a brand committed to modernizing and upgrading Japan’s pastry culture. I have long been an ardent fan myself and have reviewed many of their offerings over the years.

And for autumn 2026, they unveiled a brand-new cheesecake starring Japanese chestnuts.

An Unprecedented Harmony of Japanese Chestnut and Coffee Cheesecake

This creation is sold under their “Petit” line of individual cup-sized desserts. It retails for 972 yen per cup in physical boutiques, or 4,104 yen for a 4-piece box on their official online store.

Looking closely at the dessert, the surface is blanketed with a crumbly, finely grated chestnut paste (a soboro-style take on traditional chestnut kinton) made from prized Japanese chestnuts sourced from Obuse, Nagano Prefecture—a region famous across Japan for exceptional chestnuts.

The cheesecake body underneath appears plain at first glance, but it is actually crafted with fresh heavy cream that has been cold-steeped overnight with coffee beans—the same technique used in the brand’s signature “Cream Brew Coffee.”

While many chestnut cheesecakes hit the market every autumn, pairing chestnut with coffee is an exceedingly rare concept. Having previously introduced bold combinations like tonka bean cheesecake, hojicha tiramisu, and strawberry cheesecake with sansho pepper, this release is brimming with the boundary-pushing creativity that defines Mr. CHEESECAKE.

Tasting Impressions

The chestnut topping is crumbly and delicate, dissolving effortlessly on the tongue with an ephemeral melt. The cheesecake beneath has a velvety density on top, giving way to a molten, custard-like smoothness deeper in the cup. Feeling it soften and meld with your body heat is an absolute state of bliss.

Flavor-wise, the chestnut kinton releases a vivid, powerful burst of pure chestnut aroma the split-second it touches the tongue. It tastes as intensely rich as eating freshly cooked whole chestnuts, astonishingly highlighting the natural essence of the ingredient.

The cheesecake layer balances the rich depth of cream cheese and luscious heavy cream with the gentle, sophisticated bitterness of cold-infused coffee. Experiencing such complex coffee nuance in a seemingly pale, plain cheesecake is a fascinating sensation. Real vanilla seeds are also infused throughout, leaving a lingering, elegant sweetness at the back of the throat that pairs exquisitely with a cup of hot coffee or tea.

Savoring the chestnut topping and coffee cheesecake together, the bitter coffee notes tighten and elevate the milky richness and earthy sweetness of the chestnuts, creating a dynamic, structured profile. Each component maintains distinct definition while harmonizing flawlessly. It delivers the refined dessert experience of a course meal at a high-end restaurant.
