Yamazaki’s “Rich Double Cheesecake” Review: A Big-Size Hybrid of Souffle and Rare Cheese

The other day, while browsing the dessert aisle at my local supermarket, I spotted an oversized cheesecake and couldn’t resist picking it up. The item is the “Rich Double Cheesecake” released by major Japanese bakery manufacturer Yamazaki Baking (commonly known as “Yamazaki”).

A Big-Size Dessert Embodying the Classic Yamazaki Spirit

According to Yamazaki’s official website, this product has been on sale since September 2026. The price was 376 yen (may vary by store). Given its substantial size, it is priced slightly higher than standard chilled supermarket sweets.

While the scale might be hard to gauge from photos alone, it easily provides enough for 2 to 3 servings. The container is roughly as long as a 500ml plastic drink bottle, packing a hearty 609 calories.

Yamazaki is famous for producing popular, generous favorites like the “Marugoto Sausage” savory roll, the “Marugoto Banana” cake roll, and the oversized “Mini Snack Gold” pastry. This cheesecake proudly carries on that quintessential Yamazaki generous-portion spirit.

Conveniently, there is a plastic liner beneath the cake, allowing you to lift it cleanly out of the container to slice and serve.

A Two-Layer Cheesecake Combining Souffle and Rare Cheese Cream

Let’s take a look at the cake’s structure. The top is coated with fine sponge cake crumbs.

The cake itself consists of three layers: cheese cream on top, cheese souffle in the middle, and a layer of sponge cake at the very bottom.

You might notice a dark band near the bottom; this isn’t chocolate, but simply the golden-baked crust of the sponge cake base.

Conceptually, it is a two-layer hybrid cheesecake combining cheese souffle with rare cheese cream. The fine sponge crumb topping is somewhat reminiscent of LeTAO’s iconic Double Fromage (though LeTAO’s version layers baked cheesecake with unbaked rare cheese).

Tasting Impressions

Taking a bite, the first striking impression is its airy, fluffy texture. The bottom souffle layer has a springy, moist bounce reminiscent of a soft chiffon cake. The upper cheese cream appears blended with whipped cream, delivering an airy, velvety melt. Paired with the soft crumb topping, it leaves an overall gentle, comforting impression.

Matching this gentle texture is a mellow sweetness. The bottom souffle and sponge layers have the straightforward sweetness of a classic sponge cake. The cheese cream leans closer to sweet whipped cream, resulting in a distinctly milky flavor profile.

For a dessert branded as a “Cheesecake,” the cheese punch is undeniably modest. On the other hand, it offers a gentle, universally appealing taste—much like enjoying a fluffy chiffon cake topped with sweet whipped cream.

Just like other Yamazaki crowd-pleasers, the large portion doesn’t come at the expense of taste. It is an unpretentious, genuinely satisfying sweet that hits the spot with comforting simplicity.

Yamazaki also appears to sell a tiramisu in this same oversized format. If I spot it, I look forward to reviewing that as well.
